Walsh Construction and joint venture transformed and expanded the South Shore Line rail corridor with new double tracks within a 26.6-mile section between Gary and Michigan City. This expansion was pivotal for enhancing safety along the entire alignment, while increasing service capacity and train speeds. The new double-track alignment removes the previously existing street-running tracks and its 20 at-grade crossings to provide a safer environment for passengers boarding trains. Travel times from Michigan City to Chicago are notably reduced with the new infrastructure. The project also included the replacement of the existing street-running tracks, a new overhead contact system, new and modified railroad signals and control systems, reconstruction of at-grade crossings including a new and modified grade crossing warning equipment, culvert replacements, passenger platform upgrades at five stations, additional surface parking lots, four new railroad bridges and three types of retaining wall systems.
